Hear from outdoor enthusiasts during the 2017 Adventure Speaker Series

Five Rivers MetroParks and Wright State University have partnered to offer four presentations to inspire a sense of adventure in outdoor enthusiasts of all experience levels as part of the biennial Adventure Speaker Series. Kicking off in February, these engrossing, all-ages talks cover such topics as biking, hiking and paddling.

“The Adventure Speaker Series is a chance for Daytonians to hear from outdoor adventurers who test their personal limits while connecting with their natural surroundings,” said Lucy Sánchez, MetroParks outdoor recreation event coordinator. “These stories will inspire guests to embark on their own outdoor adventures.”

The Adventure Speaker Series talks last an hour and a half; admission is free. The schedule is:

Bike Touring the Underground Railroad
Jordan Hart
Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.: Wright State University Student Union
In fall 2016, Troy native Jordan Hart rode his bicycle more than 2,000 miles along America’s legendary route to freedom from Mobile, Alabama, to Owen Sound, Ontario. Read Hart’s speaker bio.

Bikepacking the Great Divide

Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.: Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark
The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the world’s premier off-pavement tour that crisscrosses the Rockies from Canada to the Mexican border. Learn about Soprych’s more than 2,700-mile trip of exploration on two wheels. Read Soprych’s speaker bio.

Backpacking the Buckeye Trail
Chuck and Beth Hewett
Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.: Wright State University Student Union
Follow the blue blazes around the 1,444-mile trail that circumnavigates the Buckeye State with Chuck and Beth Hewett as your guides. This pair of experienced long-distance backpackers is literally writing the book on the nation’s longest loop trail. Read their speaker bios.

The Great Great Miami River Expedition

Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m.: Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark
Follow the journey of three local paddlers as they make their way from the headwaters of the Great Miami River to the confluence of the Ohio. Learn what it takes to plan a multi-day kayak trip, from the gear needed to coordinating nightly camping, and get ideas on how you can plan your next kayaking adventure. Read their speaker bios.
