Don't Call It A Hamburger

There are certain burgers that transcend the “hamburger” label.  The burger I had today wasn’t just a hamburger… it wasn’t just a steak burger…it was a Mohawk Burger.  Chef Aaron Hanover of the Mohawk Freestyle Grill Food Truck hand crafts one of the best burgers in the Miami Valley.

It starts with the meat.  When he pulled the big glob of red meat from the container in the refrigerator, I could tell we were dealing with something special.  This was ground ribeye steak, not your regular ground beef.  It is cooked on a flat top grill so the edges get nice and crispy and there is that perfect amount of char and crunch to it.  Chef Hanover then adds American or Pepperjack cheese and lets that melt to a temperature somewhere between liquid and heaven.  That perfectly seared steak patty, dripping with gooey golden cheese, is then piled high onto a premium artisan bun.  BUT WAIT!  THERE’S MORE!  By this time, my mouth was already watering, but then he went and did it… he topped it with thick cut quality bacon.  Mohawk Burger

I don’t mean those thin little overcooked strips of something that resembles bacon you get at fast food places.  This was real honest to goodness bacon.  He then added mustard, mayo, grilled onions, thick cut pickle slices, lettuce and tomatoes so perfectly ripened that he must have just plucked them from a garden.

With the first bite, I knew I wasn’t coming up for air until this Mohawk Burger was gone. I didn’t stop to drink, talk or breathe.  I just kept cramming it in my mouth until I started tasting fingers.

Because the bacon was thicker cut, its flavor profile made it a true partner to the ground ribeye instead of merely an afterthought.  This was a true Bacon Cheeseburger, not just a Cheeseburger with some bacon on it.  It was the kind of burger that made me want to trade in my clothes for animal skins, live in a cave and just utter primeval grunts instead of words.  It brought out my inner Neanderthal. I imagine this is what those Brontosaurus Burgers that Fred Flintstone was always eating tasted like.

They also have a spicier Moroccan inspired burger called the FireHawk Burger.  If you prefer more bacon than beef, they have something called Hoggenstein.  It is like a burger but the patty is made completely of bacon.  If you are looking for lighter fare, they offer Hawaiian Fish Tacos, but come on… go for the burger!  I am sure they have a defibrillator on hand if our arteries spontaneously clog with meat.

The Mohawk Freestyle Grill Food Truck is based out of Troy; so for you folks up north who miss out on a lot of the other food trucks, you are in luck if you like a good burger.  They don’t just stick to the north though, you can find them all around the local Dayton area.  The easiest way to find out where they will be is to follow their Facebook page.

This weekend they will be in Middletown at Start Skydiving for the Wounded Warrior Weekend event 10am until mid afternoon.  Stop by and then have fun at the Hot Air Balloon and Skydiving Festival!
