Germanfest 2017 won't be held at Carillon Park

Dayton History have not renewed their agreement with local German club to host the annual Germanfest Picnic.

Germanfest 2017 won't be held at Carillon Park

Update 1/6/2017:  Following considerable criticism on social media and elsewhere, Brady Kress, Dayton History’s president and CEO, released a statement today that read “While we will no longer host the GermanFest Picnic, importantly, we have also decided that we will not create our own German heritage event. It was never our intent to harm the club.”

Dayton Liederkranz-Turner, the organization behind the popular Germanfest Picnic, will not be holding its 2017 festival at Carillon Park.

Liederkranz-Turner is the oldest German-American club in the Dayton area, dating back to 1890.  The festival was held at Carillon Park for 30 out of its 33-year history.  A statement from the club's facebook page read as follows:

"We were shocked to receive this letter from CarillonPark yesterday. Not only have they terminated their relationship with Germanfest Picnic, they are planning their own competing event for the same timeframe."

Dayton History, the non-profit organization that operates Carillon Park had originally planned its own 10-day German Heritage Festival. Those plans have now been scrapped.

The location of the 2017 Germanfest Picnic, currently planned for August 11-13, will be discussed at the Liederkranz-Turner annual meeting this Sunday.

Stay tuned for updates.
