Students flying high and defying gravity during Wicked-themed theatre camp

Off To See The Wizard

As the mother of a theatre kid, I know all the songs of Wicked by heart. So when I received an email announcing a week long theatre camp to coincide with the run of Wicked at the Schuster Center, I knew my daughter would love this experience.

The Defying Gravity Summer Camp, a joint effort of Broadway Studio and the Victoria Theatre Association, exceeded all expectations.

Students learned scenes, songs and choreography from members of the touring company of Wicked as well as some of Dayton's top musical theatre instructors.  They also had a chance to see the material they learned demonstrated live on stage as they attended an evening performance of Wicked at the Schuster.

The week ended with a special informance for parents. Campers participated in an improv game called The Machine in which the actors learned to move and interact as a single unit on stage. They performed short scenes from the play and highlighted their dancing and singing skills by performing the uptempo Wicked number "One Short Day". The evening concluded with a rendition of leading characters Elphaba and Galinda's moving ballad "For Good".

My daughter was "Dancing Through Life" all week thanks to this fun and educational theatre camp experience.
